Development of an ecosystem restoration plan to ensure biodiversity conservation in the Tišina protected landscape in Šamac municipality

Period of implementation:

April 2024-ongoing

About:

The project aims to develop an ecosystem restoration plan for the protected Tišina wetland complex located in the Šamac municipality. Hydrological and hydrogeological processes, biodiversity, and socio-economic conditions will be thoroughly assessed to pinpoint major degradation causes.

Based on the obtained results, the plan will then be designed with a focus on restoring and enhancing natural habitats, promoting biodiversity, and implementing sustainable management practices to safeguard the ecological integrity of the area.

Development of a Regional Western Balkans Climate-Proofing Platform (WB-CPP)

Period of implementation:

November 2023 – February 2024

About:

·        Map existing digital platforms at multiple levels using the provided Excel template, focusing on those locally recognized or widely used.

·        Create concise summaries (1-2 pages each) of national adaptation priorities by analyzing national adaptation plans, communications, and Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). These summaries should highlight sectoral priorities, key geographies (e.g., coastlines, mountains, river basins, high-risk areas, provinces), integrating sector-specific insights.

·        Design a questionnaire for a user survey to gather insights on platform usability and user needs.

·        Conduct a comprehensive review of the existing climate proofing tool, identifying its most and least useful features. Suggest ways to make the most useful elements more accessible and provide recommendations for enhancing the platform’s user-friendliness, drawing on user feedback and comparative analysis of other relevant portals like EU Climate ADAPT and the Central Asia climate portal.

·        Develop a preliminary design for a new platform based on the project document and UNEP feedback. The initial version should be a basic prototype for demonstration and user testing, focusing on functionality and integration of external resources for enhanced user knowledge. Future iterations will incorporate more advanced features based on user feedback and further development needs.

Integrated Danube Environmental Assessment and Monitoring for Nature Based Solutions – IDEAM NBS

About:

IDEAM NBS project focuses on enhancing blue infrastructure through nature-based solutions (NbS) within the Danube River Basin by integrating various data sources, including remote sensing and modelling data, into the IDEAM NBS decision-support tool. This tool will aid in identifying, planning, and implementing natural water retention measures across the region.

The project involves collaboration with state environmental agencies and institutions from several countries, including the Czech Republic, Slovenia, Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Serbia, aiming to standardize data and improve water management practices. It will address issues such as flood prevention, drought management, and water quality enhancement in the Danube’s unique hydrological landscapes.

·        Project is financed by the Interreg Programme Danube Region and its Seed Money Facility and co- funded by European Union.

·        Duration of the First Phase of the Project is 12 months.

The project’s platform will address key challenges and accelerate the implementation of nature-based solutions (NbS) in the Danube basin by:

·        Providing standardized, harmonized datasets across the region, which will bridge data gaps, enhance collaboration, and support shared knowledge among stakeholders, fostering joint efforts in NbS implementation

·        Streamlining environmental data access, reducing the need to navigate multiple sources and institutions, making the process more efficient and user-friendly

·        Delivering site selection algorithms, enabling the identification of ideal locations for NbS using an ecosystem-based approach, which will support more informed decision-making

·        Facilitating faster data acquisition and automated analysis, lowering costs and improving the efficient allocation of financial resources for NbS projects
